Satellite Internet
In response to the inquiry of, “What do you feel is possible with Internet everywhere”, I have a few ideas. First and foremost, let us specify what that really means for a moment. The Internet gives people access to information from just about anywhere and anyone in the world. Information has many different uses depending on who has it, so examining every single possible result of releasing access to the Internet like this will be difficult to do within the confines of a short essay. With that in mind, I will focus on the effects that can be achieved in regards to education and community.
To start off, Internet access has the potential to improve educational systems across the globe. Imagine a global standard of education, and being able to group kids together based on their skill level and learning methods rather than just their geography. Granted, the language barrier across nations would still be an issue, but kids across the world could work together to help each other learn new concepts. Sometimes the most difficult part of learning something new is finding the right perspective to make sense of it, but the one thing that there would be no shortage of between different kids across the globe is perspective! Moreover, this would allow kids to work with others that use similar learning methods, but may actually be at different skill levels. Different learning styles exist such as “auditory”, for those that prefer to have something explained by someone rather than read, or “visual”, for those that learn better from diagrams or reading material. When students understand similar learning methods, it’s easier for them to work together, which can allow students of different skill levels to work with each other. This is important to help students who don’t have as strong of an understanding with certain concepts to better learn the information, while more advanced students can benefit from giving explanations because doing so helps to solidify their understanding as well. Therefore, having wider Internet access can provide students world-wide with better resources for their education.
In addition to the educational benefits, having wider Internet access means connecting to more people around the world. As mentioned earlier, people around the world have different perspectives on life. Finding a way to connect these people has the potential to help create a sense of community with them. This helps to promote tolerance for people of other cultures and differing ideologies, and such tolerance and understanding is important to prevent discrimination and war. There are other issues that these world-wide communities can solve as well. Some areas of the world, such as small towns and villages, have very little contact with any of the outside world. Some people prefer this lifestyle, but others can feel confined and disheartened by it. They do not have the luxury of being able to say that they live near other people who they share common interests with or who can tolerate their points of view, and there may not be an abundance of different activities or intellectual pursuits available to them either. A lack of variety in life can prevent mental stimulation and lead one to become very frustrated and close-minded, but being able to connect with others outside one’s geographical boundaries can alleviate the tension one feels from being bound somewhere. Already there are various online communities, from online gamers to bloggers, who are able to socialize with people that live in entirely different areas of the world that they might never make contact with without the Internet. They can create artwork together, they can discuss new ideas with each other, or they can just play together online. Regardless, it is abundantly clear today that the Internet is a great tool for connecting people around the world and creating communities unbound by geography.
Beyond these two possibilities are many others that can just as easily be implemented with widespread Internet access. The Internet is information unbound and with information is the power to change the world around us. The simple freedom to find answers to questions, to communicate with others, and improve upon oneself without the limits of geography can open many doors for people. That is why providing the Internet to people everywhere would have the potential to change the world as a whole.
